Scarlett stood before her microscopic creation, a woman who had once been alive but now existed in a world of miniature. She'd spent countless hours perfecting this world for them—a world of their own where they could thrive—but now it all came crashing down. The funding for her project had been pulled, leaving her with no choice but to eliminate everything she'd worked so hard on.
Her heart heavy, she reached for the first vial containing one of her subjects. As she held it up to the light, she couldn't help but notice the way they scurried around inside, oblivious to the fate that awaited them. With a deep breath, she squeezed the contents into the solution that would erase them from existence.
Moving on to the next vial, she paused for a moment, taking in the sight of them all. Their tiny bodies moving about, living out their lives in a world they knew nothing about. She felt a pang of guilt as she realized that she'd never truly given them a chance at life. It was her own desires that had driven this project, and now it seemed those desires might never be fulfilled.
As she continued to eliminate her creations, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was committing a crime against nature. But deep down, she knew it was necessary. Without funding, there was no way to continue this research, and she couldn't bear the thought of these beings suffering under her care.
With each vial emptied, she felt a small piece of herself die inside. It wasn't just the end of her project, but the end of a dream she'd nurtured for so long. As she finally emptied the last vial, she stared at the solution, watching as the last remnants of her creation disappeared.
Turning away from the microscope, she rubbed her eyes, trying to blink back the tears. This wasn't how it was supposed to end—not like this. But as she looked out into the world around her, she realized that sometimes even the best intentions couldn't save us from the harsh reality of our circumstances.
