Becca's Giant Step Teacher
Becca, a 17-year-old high school student, walked nervously into her classroom on the first day of school. It was the first time she would have Mr. Williams as her teacher, and she had heard rumors about him being strict. The classroom was filled with other students, some familiar faces from previous years and others new. But as she looked around, Becca couldn't help but feel out of place. She was taller than most of the boys in her grade and most of the girls by at least a head. She hated standing out like this, but there was nothing she could do about it.
As Mr. Williams entered the room, all eyes were on him. He was an imposing figure, towering over everyone in the room. He had a stern look on his face as he prepared for his first lecture of the year. Becca felt her heart racing as he approached her desk.
"Hello, Becca. I'm Mr. Williams," he said in a deep voice. "I understand you're new to this school. Do you need any help getting settled in?"
Becca was taken aback by his warm greeting. She shook her head, trying to hide her nervousness. "N-no, sir. I think I'll be fine. Thank you."
Mr. Williams nodded and moved on to the next desk. As he began his lecture, Becca tried to focus on what he was saying. But it was hard when all she could think about was how huge he was compared to her. His voice echoed through the room, making it seem even bigger than it already was. And every time he moved, Becca couldn't help but feel like an ant next to a giant.
During the first break, Becca hurried to the bathroom to calm herself down. She splashed water on her face and took deep breaths, trying to get a grip on her nerves. When she returned to the classroom, Mr. Williams was standing by his desk, grading papers. He looked up when she entered and gave her a warm smile, making her heart skip a beat.
The rest of the day passed in a blur for Becca. She struggled to keep up with the lessons and couldn't help but feel like she was constantly in Mr. Williams' shadow. As the bell rang for the end of class, Becca gathered her things and prepared to leave. But before she could stand up, Mr. Williams approached her desk once again.
"Becca, stay after class, please," he said in a calm voice.
Becca felt a knot forming in her stomach as she remained seated. What had she done wrong? Was she going to be punished for not paying attention? As the other students filed out of the room, Becca felt even more alone and vulnerable.
Finally, it was just her and Mr. Williams in the classroom. He walked over to her desk and stood behind it, towering over her. Becca didn't know what to say or do. She felt like she was trapped, like there was nowhere she could go.
"Becca, there's something I want to show you," he said, his deep voice rumbling through the room.
He handed her a stack of papers and pointed to the top one. Becca's heart sank as she saw her name on the cover page. She was sure she knew what was coming next.
But as she flipped through the pages, she realized that they weren't filled with corrections or criticisms. Instead, she saw compliments and encouraging words from Mr. Williams. He had taken the time to go through her work and find the good parts, the parts where she had done well.
"I just wanted to let you know that I noticed your hard work, Becca," he said, his voice gentle. "You're a talented student, and I want to help you succeed."
Becca couldn't believe what was happening. Tears started to well up in her eyes as she looked up at Mr. Williams. He was so much bigger than her, yet he had made her feel safe and supported.
"Thank you, Mr. Williams," she whispered, her voice shaking.
As the meeting ended, Becca left the classroom feeling lighter than she had in years. She knew that it was going to be a challenge to keep up with Mr. Williams' high standards, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like she had someone in her corner, someone who believed in her and her abilities. And even though he was a giant figure in both height and personality, Becca felt like she had found a friend in Mr. Williams.
