As the school bus pulled away from the parking lot, Katie felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness. She was about to embark on a new adventure, but she couldn't help but wonder if she was ready for it. Her mom had packed her a lunch with all sorts of goodies, and she had spent hours the night before picking out the perfect first-day outfit. But nothing could prepare her for what was about to happen.

The bus ride seemed to last forever, and by the time they arrived at the school, Katie was ready to burst out of her seat. She gathered her things and followed the crowd of chattering students off the bus and into the school building. The halls were bustling with activity as teachers directed classes to their classrooms and students milled about, introducing themselves and exchanging friendly chatter.

Katie made her way through the crowd, her heart pounding in her chest as she tried to keep up with the flow of people. She felt like a small fish in a big pond, but she was determined to make the best of it. As she turned a corner, she heard a loud crash behind her and turned just in time to see a locker door fly open. Inside was a petite girl, no bigger than a doll, who was trying frantically to close it before anything else fell out.

"Hey, are you okay?" Katie called out, rushing over to the girl.

The girl turned around and looked up at Katie with wide eyes, her tiny frame shaking as she tried to hold the locker door closed. "I-I'm fine," she stammered, her voice barely audible over the din of the hallway. "I just... I just need to find my class."

"No problem," Katie said, kneeling down to be at the girl's eye level. "What's your name?"

"It's Alice," the girl replied, her voice still shaking. "Alice Johnson."

Katie couldn't help but smile at the tiny girl. "Well, Alice Johnson, I'm Katie. And if you need any help finding your class or anything else, just ask. Okay?"

Alice nodded, a small smile appearing on her face. "Thank you, Katie. That would be really helpful."

As they stood up and started walking down the hallway, Katie felt a strange sensation wash over her. She looked down at Alice, who was barely as tall as her waist, and felt a wave of protectiveness wash over her. She found herself wanting to keep Alice safe, to make sure nothing bad happened to her.

They continued walking, Katie leading the way as Alice followed close behind. She could feel Alice's tiny hand gripping her pant leg, and she smiled reassuringly down at her. They turned a corner, and Katie saw a sea of students pouring into a classroom. She could feel Alice's grip tighten on her leg, and she knew that this must be their classroom.

"This is where we need to be," Katie said, kneeling down again to be at Alice's level. "Do you want me to help you find a seat?"

Alice nodded, her big eyes filled with fear. Katie smiled and stood up, towering over the other students as she looked for an empty seat. She spotted one in the back of the room and made her way there, pulling over a chair for Alice to sit in.

"Here you go, Alice," she said, helping Alice into the seat. "This should be a good spot for you."

Alice nodded, her eyes darting around the room. Katie gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze before turning to face the teacher, who was introducing herself to the class. As the lesson began, Katie found herself glancing back at Alice, making sure she was okay. And as the day wore on, she realized that she had found a new friend - someone who needed her help and protection.
