Robolord - Off Balance

[floatrx] [/floatrx]
Walking down the neon-lit streets of a futuristic city, Emily felt out of place. The towering skyscrapers, the bustling crowds of people who rushed past her, and the incessant hum of machinery all contributed to making her feel like an intruder from another time. She was visiting the city to participate in an underground robot combat tournament, something she never would have considered doing back home. But here she was, standing at the gates of a massive arena where massive robots battled it out for the amusement of their human spectators.

Emily sighed, feeling lost and overwhelmed. She was only 5'2", which made her feel even smaller than she already did. Her blue eyes scanned the crowd, looking for someone who might be able to help her find her bearings in this unfamiliar world. Suddenly, she spotted a man who stood out from the rest. He was tall and imposing, with a body that seemed to radiate confidence. His eyes were fixed on her, an unmistakable glint of interest in them. Emily swallowed hard before mustering up the courage to approach him.

"Excuse me," she said timidly, tugging at the hem of her shirt. The man towered over her, his head nearly reaching her chin. He was at least 7 feet tall, his broad shoulders stretching the seams of his leather vest. "Do you happen to know where I can find the registration desk for the tournament?"

The man chuckled, amusement glinting in his eyes. "I'm guessing you've never been to one of these before, have you?" He seemed surprisingly gentle for someone who looked so intimidating.

Emily shook her head, feeling even more self-conscious beneath his scrutiny. "No, I... I haven't," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't really know what to expect."

The man nodded, a knowing smile playing on his lips. "Well, lucky for you, I'm here to help." He reached down, his hand engulfing hers in a firm grip. "Come on, I'll show you the way." He led her through the crowd, guiding her towards a set of massive double doors that led into the arena. As they entered, Emily could feel the thrum of excitement in the air, amplified by the roar of the crowd and the metallic clang of fighting robots.

Inside, the arena was a sight to behold. Massive robots towered over the ring, their sleek metal exteriors glistening in the bright lights. The arena was packed with people, all of them cheering and clapping as two robots battled it out in the center of the ring. Emily felt like a fish out of water, her eyes wide with awe and fear. But the man at her side seemed unfazed, his gaze fixed on the match in progress.

"So, what kind of robot are you planning on entering?" he asked, his deep voice resonating in her ears. Emily blinked, surprised by the question. She hadn't even thought about that.

"Um..." she stammered, unsure of how to answer. "I don't really have a robot of my own. I was kind of hoping to find someone to build one for me." She looked up at him, hoping he wouldn't think she was too inexperienced or clueless.

The man chuckled again, his amusement clearly not directed at her this time. "Well, then consider yourself lucky. I happen to know someone who's looking for a pilot." His eyes flickered towards her, a dangerous glint in his gaze. "And I think you'd make an excellent candidate." Emily felt her heart skip a beat, her breath catching in her throat. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Was he serious? Was he just toying with her? She couldn't tell.

Before she could form a response, the man led her over to a group of people huddled around a table. They were all talking animatedly, their eyes fixed on a holographic schematic that floated above the table. As they approached, Emily could see that they were discussing a robot design. It was sleek and deadly, its metal exoskeleton gleaming in the bright lights. She couldn't help but feel intimidated by its sheer size and power.

"Guys," the man said, clapping his hands to get their attention. "I'd like you to meet someone." He gestured towards Emily, who felt her stomach drop as she realized what was happening. These people were going to build a giant robot for her to fight in the tournament? They were going to trust her with their creation?

The group turned to look at her, their expressions a mix of curiosity and skepticism. Emily swallowed hard, trying to steady her nerves as she met their gaze. She could feel the weight of their expectations pressing down on her, making her feel small and insignificant. But then, something strange happened. As she looked around the room, she saw something she hadn't noticed before. The other competitors were all men, towering giants compared to her. And somehow, that made her feel stronger, more determined. She squared her shoulders and met their gaze head-on.

"I'm ready," she said, her voice strong and clear. "Let's do this."
