GTSDelights - The Long Month

The sound of the television reverberated through the quiet apartment, drowning out the slight rustling of papers and occasional sniffle from the couch where Beth was curled up. She was half-watching a rerun of her favorite show when her phone buzzed, pulling her out of her reverie. Frowning, she reached over to pick it up off the coffee table, noticing the time on the screen. It was much later than she'd realized—almost midnight. With a sigh, she swiped the screen to answer the text message.

"Hey, what are you still doing up? You should get some rest." She typed out the automatic reply to her brother, knowing he would likely be the one texting this late. She settled back into her spot on the couch, trying to ignore the ache in her chest that seemed to get worse every time she thought about him.

Her mind wandered back to the argument they'd had earlier that day, feeling a familiar twinge of guilt. They hadn't seen each other in months—not since before she'd moved across the country for work—and it showed. Their words had cut deep, leaving scars that still stung, even though they both knew they didn't mean them. She missed him, missed their childhood bond, missed the person he used to be before life got in the way.

With a heavy heart, she turned off the television and stood up, stretching her long legs out in front of her. She paused, taking a deep breath as she looked around the empty apartment. It was too quiet for her tastes; it felt almost suffocating at times. But it was home now, even if it didn't quite feel like it yet.

As she began to undress, she found herself thinking about the month ahead. It was going to be a long month without him, but she would make it through. She'd stay busy with work and try to keep her mind off of things by watching old movies or binge-watching shows on Netflix. Maybe she'd even start working out again; she'd let herself go a bit since moving here.

Beth climbed into bed, pulling the covers up to her chin. Despite her best efforts, sleep evaded her for a while longer. Instead, she lay there, staring up at the ceiling, lost in thought. She tried to remember the last time she'd felt truly happy, but the memories kept slipping away, like sand through her fingers.

Eventually, exhaustion got the better of her, and she drifted off to sleep, hoping that maybe tomorrow would bring a little bit of peace.
